Getting Back to School Nature Style!
Hello hello hello everyone! Thanks so much for heading on over to check out what we have to say in this month’s blog post! This month, we are discussing a topic that is typically loved by parents and dreaded by kids; back to school season! While this summer surely has been fun, preparing for what is next can also serve as an exciting time that allows us to transition into much needed routines for school time. But we can all agree that the end of summer always brings that familiar feeling, right? The days are still long, yet there's a subtle shift in the air and the undeniable truth that the school year is just around the corner. While the thought of sitting in class and waking up early to catch the bus might make you just want to hit ‘snooze’, we want to inform you (in the funnest way possible) that nature holds the secret to a smoother, more energized transition back to the classroom. Yeah, that’s right guys! The secret to getting back to school in a jiff has been under our noses and in our backyards the entire time! Nature, plants, wildlife, the changing of the seasons all act as an undercover agent to help make hitting the books again in September a little easier!
Can you think of a time when getting outside was for more than just the fresh air? Maybe you feel reminded of a memory that occurred in a beautiful outdoor environment or simply are a lover of all the outdoor activities that exist out there! Kayaking, hiking, geocaching perhaps? Well, reflecting on these points helps us understand that getting outside isn't just about the fresh air we breathe. It’s a powerful tool for recalibrating your mind and body. Really think about it: after a summer of late nights and relaxed schedules, our internal clocks can get a little out of whack. This is where the magic of the setting sun comes in! Did you know that human bodies are incredibly sensitive to light, and the gradual decrease in natural light as the sun dips below the horizon sends signals to the brain indicates that it's time to start winding down? Isn’t that so cool? Then what happens is the release of melatonin. If you aren’t sure what that is, don’t worry! Melatonin is the hormone that makes us feel sleepy and helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle. So, spending some time outdoors in the evening, even just watching a sunset, can actually help reset your internal clock and get you ready for those earlier school-night bedtimes. Cool huh?!
And speaking of getting outside, why not grab your camera and dive into the wonderful world of nature photography? It's not just a creative outlet; it's a fantastic way to sharpen your focus and observation skills- perfectly aligned with what is needed for academic success! Do you know what also is a great way to get on board with nature photography in the classroom? Booking a Focus on Nature in-school workshop, or sharing our programs with an educator in your life.
Anyway, back to our favourite topic; nature photography! Challenge yourself to try capturing the intricate details of a dewdrop on a leaf, the vibrant colours of a butterfly, or the dramatic silhouettes of trees against a sunset sky. Some topics we have previously covered for your convenience ;) Focusing on composition, lighting and framing trains your eye to see the world differently, fostering a deeper appreciation for your surroundings and subtly honing in on those critical thinking muscles. Plus, it’s a super relaxing activity that can help de-stress before the intense academic hustle begins. So, before you trade your sandals for new back to school kicks, take a moment to soak in the natural world around you. Touch grass as they say! Your mind, body, and grades will thank you for it! Take care and best wishes to all those heading back to school in September! We cannot wait for the memories that will be made this upcoming school year.
Be sure to Focus on Nature this school year by booking an in-school workshop, checking out our nifty resources, or making a donation.
