Sun Too Sunny? How to Focus in the Summer

Heyo nature lovers! Loving summer? Us too! This month brought summer camp memories that will be remembered for a lifetime and nature snaps that we cannot wait to show you! We really couldn't wait, so some of them are even featured right here in this post. While we are all still fully (and rightfully) in vacation mode, let us get into the blog so there is less on your summer reading list!

Speaking of summer, let's keep these good times going, shall we? We want to discuss a special type of photography- Shuttershine; where every shot is sun-sational. Yes, that tagline was made up for the sake of this blog, but really, wanna take some sun- sational shots? Keep reading!

So, as we know, summer is a fantastic time to capture the beauty of nature, which is why we run summer camps year after year! Spots for this summer are still available in Guelph, Cambridge, and Hamilton. Secure yours now!

Since the title of this blog and it's in the name *wink*, let's go over how to really FOCUS while outside during the summer. Before you even head out, have a clear idea of what you want to photograph. Is it a specific flower, a scenic landscape, or maybe some wildlife? This helps you narrow your attention and really enhance your eye as a photographer. Once you're out there, take a moment to simply observe your surroundings. What catches your eye and grabs your attention? What's the story you want to tell with your photos? Sometimes, just sitting quietly and being present can lead to unexpected and beautiful shots. Remember to take breaks, hydrate, and enjoy the experience, all with your camera in hand!

Naturally, with the presence of light, there are shadows, which we encourage photographers to work with and embrace! Instead of avoiding them, use them creatively. Strong sunlight can create really interesting patterns and contrasts with shadows. Look for leading lines or shapes formed by shadows that can add depth and drama to your photos. You can also use shadows to frame your subject or create a sense of mystery. Find this topic interesting? Read our previous blog about Shadows or book a Light and Perspective workshop.

Next, consider using fill flash, even in bright sunlight! It might sound counterintuitive, but a subtle fill flash can help soften harsh shadows on your subject and bring out details that might otherwise be lost. Just make sure to dial down the power so it looks natural and not overpowering. Oh oh oh, and don’t forget to pay attention to reflections! Water surfaces, wet leaves, or even shiny rocks can create beautiful reflections in bright sunlight! These can add an extra layer of interest to your photos and make them more dynamic. Experiment with different angles to capture the best reflections.

Finally, don't forget about shooting into the sun for some cool effects! While it can be challenging, positioning your subject with the sun behind them can create stunning silhouettes or beautiful lens flares that look like orbs at times! Just be careful not to look directly at the sun through your viewfinder and make sure your lens is clean to avoid excessive flare. On that note, make sure you pack your sunglasses on your nature walk!

Happily, summer has not yet come to an end, but this blog post has! We wish you a safe and fun remainder of your summer holidays. But as we do look ahead, we invite you to book an in-school workshop with us, or donate toward helping us connect young people around Ontario with the nature around them. See you soon sunshine!
