Back to the Basics: Why Nature Photography

Hello there and welcome back to another end-of-month blog post! As you may know, at Focus on Nature, our mission has always been to inspire young people to connect with the natural world through photography. But WHY nature photography? And why is it so important to engage students and youth from across Ontario in this experience? Today, let’s explore and talk about the impact and importance of bringing youth and nature together through the lens of a camera!

In a world full of screens, we think it's important to get back to basics and appreciate the beauty that's right outside our doors. So, when kids pick up a camera and head into nature, that exact magic happens! They start to notice the tiny details they might usually miss – like the cool patterns on a ladybug or the way the sunlight sparkles on a spiderweb. It's like a treasure hunt where the prize is a fantastic photo and a newfound appreciation for the little things around us. Then, at the end of one of our in school workshops, all student photos are compiled into a slideshow where everyone’s nature snaps can be admired!

Next, when kids get up close and personal with nature, they start to care about it. They see how delicate everything is and why it's important to protect it. As they explore and photograph the natural world, they learn about its wonders and why it's so important to protect it. They see firsthand how their actions can impact the environment and get inspired to make a difference. Plus, being outside and increasing one’s awareness about the natural elements around is a great way to chill out and de-stress. Focusing on capturing the perfect shot helps kids be present in the moment and forget about all the hustle and bustle and cravings for screen time.

So, at the end of the day, nature photography is about so much more than just taking pictures. It’s about slowing down, exploring the world with curiosity, and building a meaningful connection with the environment around us. It is why we do what we do year-round, sunshine through snowfall! By encouraging youth across Ontario to step outside with a camera in hand, we are actively inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers and environmental stewards. Every photo captured is a reminder that nature is all around us — and that even the smallest moments outside can leave a lasting impact.
