Persuasive Writing Contest

Hi all! It’s good to be back blogging again! I hope you enjoyed Sarah’s heartfelt blog post from last month! Haven’t read it yet? Click here to see what Sarah had to say last month.

Spring brings perfect photo taking weather, and seems to put everyone in good spirits. In honour of the spring season, the team here at Focus on Nature decided that a contest was in order. However, we wanted this contest to be different from contests and giveaways we have run in the past.

I can recall in my elementary school days, practising persuasive writing, and trying to convince my teacher’s to align with my argumentative stance. Thus, we decided that in order to win a free in school workshop- classes would have to submit a persuasive letter, indicating why they feel they deserve to be the recipient of the free workshop. This contest was meant for students to practise the skill of persuasive writing.

We received some amazing letters! See some of them below. The classes that took part in this contest are experts in the field of persuasive writing! It was very difficult to select the winner of the contest! Let me say- so many classes came neck in neck.

The winner of this is contest is a grade 4/5 class at St. James Catholic Elementary School in St. Catherines. I believe that if you give their letter a read, you’ll understand why they were crowned the winners, and perhaps even be persuaded yourself!

Our mission at Focus on Nature is to connect children with nature through photography. Our workshops align with the curriculum that students are required to follow and learn throughout their years of schooling. Our workshops present themselves as a day of fun and a break from school work- but the students are learning all day long (shhhhh don’t tell them!). We wanted this contest to be an educational experience for students, and based on the submissions we received, we believe we were successful.
