The Elemenets of Design Workshop
Our Elements of Design workshop is geared to students grades 3-8.
We start with an interactive talk covering the Elements of Design, composition ideas, and the basics of using a digital camera. Students are then given cameras and brought outside to practice what they learn on a morning adventure walk to a nearby natural area. Our program leaders guide students in nature awareness and sensory activities.
In the afternoon, students are taught how to edit their photos and are engaged in creative outdoor activities, such as building nature sculptures or a nature photo scavenger hunt. The students’ best shots get shared with the class in an end-of-day slideshow! We leave each class with their Top Shots and a newfound appreciation for nature.
Extension Activities
Art wall at P.L. Robertson PS
There are many opportunities for you to continue your Focus on Nature experience after the workshop is completed, such as creating a photo board with each student’s top photo or having the students do a creative writing project on the photos they took. You can see our suggested extension activities on our Teacher Resource Page.
Art Galleries
2024 Fresh Perspectives photo exhibit at Guelph City Hall
Each year, Focus on Nature has online and in-person photography exhibits in various regions to show off the best photos from the school year. We love showcasing this artwork so the public can get inspired by these students and connect our youth and communities through nature. You can check out last year’s online Gallery on our website. We always reach out to you and the students if their art is selected for the online or in person art gallery.
